How to study for the Einbürgerungstest

The test in 30 seconds

  • The test has 33 multiple-choice questions, each with four answers and one correct one.
  • You get 60 minutes and need at least 17 correct to pass.
  • 30 questions come from the general pool of 300 that applies in every federal state. 3 come from the 10 questions about your own federal state, which you choose with the 📍 button at the top.
  • Every possible question for your state is in this trainer. The exam only reuses them, so learning all 310 is enough.

A simple routine

  1. Study every day. It shows what is due for review first, then the day's new questions: 15 by default, or more or fewer once you set your exam date. Clear the due ones before moving on.
  2. Learn the 10 questions for your state in the first days. They come first among the new ones.
  3. Take a Mock exam about once a week, and daily in the last week. Aim for 27 or more out of 33 so you have a safety margin over 17.
  4. Set your exam date under Your progress. The trainer spreads the questions you have not seen yet over the days left, keeping the last day or two for review. Without a date, 15 a day takes about three weeks. Keep reviewing until the exam.

What the tabs do

📖 Study
Your daily session. Due questions first (weakest first), then the day's new ones (15 a day, or the number your exam date calls for). A question you miss comes back once at the end of the session. When you are done for the day you can press Study more to keep going.
🎯 Mock exam
33 random questions in 60 minutes, like the real test. You can change answers until you press Finish exam, and the clock keeps running if you reload. When it hits zero the exam is submitted. Afterwards you can step through every question with the explanation.

How the review schedule works

The trainer uses a simple spaced-repetition system. Every question sits in a box. A correct answer moves it up and delays the next review. A wrong answer sends it back to the start.

Answers given inside a mock exam update the schedule too. Skipped exam questions do not.

Tips for learning

  • The exam is in German, so the English translations are off by default. Switch them on with the 🌐 button when a question or answer is unclear, then try the same question again without them.
  • After an answer, read the Warum note. It is in simple German, with the English version below it. Use the link under the note to hide the English when you want to test yourself. Understanding the reason sticks better than memorising the letter.
  • Watch for “nicht” in questions such as “Which is not …”. They ask for the exception.
  • Dates, numbers and names (1945, 1949, 1961, 1989, 1990, 16 states, 5% threshold) come up a lot. Make small flash cards for them.
  • Some questions show a picture: coats of arms, a map, a ballot paper or photographs. Look at the image before the answers.
  • Short sessions every day work better than one long session a week.

Your progress and privacy

  • Everything is stored only in this browser. There is no account, and nothing is sent to a server.
  • Clearing your browser data, or using another browser or device, starts you from zero. Use Export progress to save a file and Import progress to load it again elsewhere.

Good to know

  • This is an unofficial study aid. The German wording is what counts in the exam. The English translations and explanations are there to help you understand.
  • Your state decides which 10 state questions you get. Switching it keeps everything you have already answered, so you can switch back later without losing progress. It cannot be changed while a mock exam is running.
  • The questions come from the BAMF catalogue dated 07.05.2025. A few answers depend on the date, such as the current Chancellor, the largest parliamentary groups and the population. Check them against the latest catalogue before your exam.
  • Details about registering for the test and where to take it are handled by your local authority or test centre. This trainer does not cover them.

Which federal state will you take the test in?

The Einbürgerungstest has 33 questions. 30 are the same everywhere, and 3 come from 10 questions about the federal state where you live or apply: its capital, flag, parliament, government and so on. We only show the 10 for your state, so you do not have to study the other 150.

You can change it any time. Your choice is stored only in this browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
